Monitoring the Modern IP Network Requires a Unified Management Solution
Submitted by Heidi Gabrielson, Solutions Marketing Manager for NetScout
Huge investments in faster servers, better protocols, high-speed backbones and virtualized services have turned yesterday’s low-speed, data-only networks into information technology platforms ready to support a multitude of 21st century business services rapidly and reliably. The amount of redundancy and re-routing architected into these networks has mostly hidden hardware or circuit outages from end users. The bigger challenge is how to address persistent and intermittent application degradations that can present an even greater threat to revenue, customer service or public reputation.
The aforementioned modern IP network can no longer be managed as multiple traffic silos. In the modern, fully converged IP network, voice, video and data compete for common resources and can affect the performance of each other – even though individual applications are seemingly working fine. A best practice approach would suggest that if your network is converged, you should employ a converged, services-aware management solution to make troubleshooting more efficient.
HP and NetScout have formed a tight partnership and have closely integrated their management consoles. This tight integration gives IT a variety of management perspectives for a complete picture of IT operations. NetScout’s nGenius Performance Management Solution works with HP Business Availability Center (BAC), HP Network Node Manager i-series (NNMi) and HP Operations Manager to provide an application-aware network perspective.

· The nGenius-HP BAC integration adds real-time and historical network monitoring, analysis, and troubleshooting depth to HP BAC’s end-to-end application management capabilities for a synergistic, rich picture of application performance from not only the end-user and system perspective, but also from the network point of view.
· The nGenius-HP NNMi integration enables unified fault, availability and application-aware performance management from a single console for faster resolution of complicated network issues.
